Upper Eyelid Surgery

If done alone blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure and does not require hospitalization. Both upper and lower lid surgeries can be performed in the same sitting on both the eyes. The procedure can be done under local or general anaesthesia depending on complexity of the procedure and the patients' general well-being. Incisions for upper lid surgery are made in the creases and so the scar is hidden in the creases. Lower lid surgery can be performed through an incision in the conjunctiva where no external scar is visible, or through an external approach just below the lash line. Optimal approach is selected depending on the problem to be addressed. For prominent fat pockets, these are excised and excess loose skin or muscle is excised if required. Removable stitches placed are generally removed in 5-7 days by which time the external healing is complete.

"Xanthos" means "yellow" in Greek. Xenthelasma are indeed skin deposits of yellow-colored fatty material and debris, the remnants of inflammatory cells (macrophages) bloated with lipid material that confers the yellow color over the upper and lower eyelids.
